Home Solar Power Systems

The only truly renewable energy source is the sun.  Because of this fact, installing home solar power systems is one of the smartest, cheapest, and most efficient alternatives to the energy we get from fossil fuels.  As energy demands skyrocket and supply falls, solar panels are becoming more affordable.

Why Use Solar Power?

According to MIT in its publication, "Powering the Planet: Chemical Challenges in Solar Energy Utilization," the Earth absorbs enough energy in a single hour to compensate for the total amount of energy consumed by humans in the entire year of 2002.

Clearly, finding ways to harness this energy in forms that are useful is very beneficial.  Thanks to advances in solar panel technology, many people are taking advantage of this energy in their own homes.

For all intents and purposes, the energy available from the sun is limitless.  And thanks to the ability of solar panels to convert the sun's energy (in the form of photons) to electricity (in the form of electrons), solar cells arranged in panels can now be used to create energy that can be used in your home, and many people are choosing to take advantage of this source of energy.

Many people, however, are concerned that their house does not receive enough direct sunlight to take advantage of solar energy.  Not to worry though, because there are actually two different types of solar panels: concentrating and non-concentrating

While concentrating panels are designed to catch direct sunlight, non-concentrating ones can collect energy from reflected or dim light, providing a realistic option for many homeowners.

And the use of home solar power systems is not restricted to generating electricity; they can, unsurprisingly, generate heat as well, even for your swimming pool.

Solar panels are clearly a cleaner, more reliable, and more efficient way of producing energy, so why, in a world plagued by energy shortages and environmental problems, isn't the sun a more popular means of generating usable power?

There are a few reasons.  The first is that the sun only shines on a particular location for a fraction of the day, and installing enough solar panels to store enough energy to make it through the nights and cloudy days can be very expensive unfortunately, still more expensive than fossil fuels.

Furthermore, if you do install enough panels to keep yourself constantly up and running, you will likely have an excess of energy at times.  Some power companies will buy that excess energy from you, but this requires an inverter to change your DC electricity into AC.

Nonetheless, the benefits of solar power are astounding.  Not only is the sun's energy renewable and clean, but also it cannot be regulated by any one government or company; full conversion to solar energy would instantly end our energy-dependence.

While the prices of fossil fuels will only continue to rise as supplies dwindle with increasing quickness, solar energy, as means of producing it become more widespread, will only become cheaper with time

Installing a home solar power systems is a great way to save money, help the environment, and help make solar energy cheaper for everyone.  Just imagine: it is a hot day in the middle of the summer and, while the sun is cooking all your neighbors, it is actually keeping you cool!

There are a lot of countries and states already that will give you a serious break on your taxes for going green and installing home solar power systems.  This, in combination with the money you can save on your electricity bill, is enough of a reason to seriously consider converting your home, at least partially, to solar energy.
